I strolled into San Matteo with my wife on a fall Sunday afternoon and it was the best experience I’ve had here in NYC. We were warmly greeted by the staff and decided to sit at the bar to watch a bit of NFL red zone. Our waiter’s name was Andres and he was PHENOMENAL. He was genuine and kind and knew the whole menu front to back. The espresso was poppin and the food was incredible. It is crazy out of the days I’ve spent here in NYC that the short time I spent at San Matteo was probably my favorite experience. Andres you are the man and keep serving with that smile you have that shines so bright.
I ordered a marinara pizza. Anywhere else in the world, a marinara pizza has sauce only. This one came with anchovies, olives and capers. I called to explain that the pizza had all of this unidentifiable items on top and the man was unrelenting saying this is a special recipe and I should have known. Never again. Crust was burnt! Worse pizza and so mushy!
Our table of 6 was very happy with everything we tried. Service and food are outstanding. Ambiance is casual, fun, dynamic and bright. We over-ordered by 30-50% but wanted to try so many dishes. The standout was the panuozzo di bartolome - not to be missed!!! Loved the cacio e pepe pizza and the special pizza (fig, prosciutto) and the broccoli rabe. Then we ordered pastas (gnocchi, rigatoni allá Bolognese, the special with shaved truffles) and both the eggplant and the chicken parmigiana. Top this off with some great cocktails and a bottle of wine, a tiramisu and a lemon almond cake and we rolled out of there with full bellies and a few doggie bags! Highly recommend.
Ordered online and it came 1.5 hours late, cold and soggy, folded on itself, and a complete mess. in between I called asking for assistance and they either did not pick up or were not helpful on my order status. Only reason I gave 2 stars is because my prior to experiences were not as horrible. I know this is not the norm but still, should never happen.
This is the best pizza in Manhattan. If you're looking for New York style pizza though, that's not what this is. This is REAL Neapolitan pizza, and it is perfect. From the sauce to the dough, with loads of topping options, (never skip the fresh basil!). This is the thing. If you want NYC style pizza, go to a place with slices hanging in the window. This is actual Italian pizza, and it's outstanding. Also, the staff is super friendly.
Simply amazing amazing food. The pizzas are the best high quality “fancy style” pizzas in NYC! The crust is nice and crunchy and has little burned tips just amazing. They have a wide selection of delicious apps and drink/wine selections. The staff are friendly attentive and super amazing. I ended up ordering delivery a week later! Highly recommended.
